Soo Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas announced earlier today the signing of the Program’s first two selections from the 2013 OHL Priority Selection – BLAKE SPEERS and COLTON WHITE – to Standard Player Agreements and Education packages.
“We are thrilled today to formally announce the signings of Blake Speers and Colton White. To add two young men of Blake and Colton’s calibre to our Program is another step forward for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds as we progress towards our goal of sustained success” explained Dubas.
Speers, a member of the Soo Thunder Minor Midget club on year ago, was selected by the Hounds in the 1st Round (11th overall).
“Blake had numerous options in the NCAA, and that became very apparent in the weeks leading up to the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. Being a product of the Sault Ste. Marie minor hockey system, we are thrilled that Blake will conclude his entire amateur career in Sault Ste. Marie by joining our program. Blake is an elite student at St. Mary’s College and we look forward to seeing Blake compete for the league’s top academic awards by not only maintaining but improving his academic achievements now that he will enter our academic program” stated Dubas.
“Blake is a highly skilled forward with excellent skating ability. We feel that, given time, to develop strength that Blake will become a very key member of our core group of players in the coming seasons.”
In 61 regular season games played in 2012-13 Speers had 43 goals and 70 assists, good for 113 points.
“It’s a childhood dream come true to sign with the Hounds. I have wanted to play for this team for as long as I can remember and I’m definitely going to make the most of the opportunity. I can’t wait to suit up for the Greyhounds” explained a very excited Speers.
In White, the Hounds selected the London, ONT product in the 2nd Round (22nd overall).
“Colton is a graduate of the same London Jr. Knights AAA Gold Team that Jared McCann graduated from. Colton comes from a terrific family and it was a pleasure to get to meet he and his parents as we approached the Priority Selection. Especially following our development camp last weekend and hearing our coaching staff rave about Colton, we are especially elated to have a defenceman of his calibre join our Program” commented the Hounds GM.
“Colton has tremendous instincts with and without the puck and has terrific four-way skating ability. Colton has the potential to be everything major junior and professional teams seek in a defenceman. He was the ability to not only play versus the opponents top lines, but also drive possession towards the offensive end versus his peer group. With time, patience, and development, we look forward to Colton doing the same things in the Ontario Hockey League.”
In 27 games played in 2012-13 Colton had 7 goals and 13 assists, good for 20 points.
“I’m really happy to finally sign and excited to get started and meet everyone. I know there is lots of hard work to be done so I can compete for a spot on the team and work towards my goal of helping the team as much as possible” said White.
Both Blake and Colton were in-town this past weekend for the Hounds Annual Development Camp.
The pair of newest Hounds will return to the Soo in August in preparations for the team’s Main Training Camp.
