NHL Debut: Tye Kartye (Apr. 26, 2023)

Ontario Hockey League

Soo Greyhounds graduate Tye Kartye had a night to remember on Wednesday, scoring in his NHL debut to help the Seattle Kraken beat the reigning Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in Game 5 of their first round series. The 21-year-old became only the eighth player ever to score in their NHL playoff debut.

The Kingston, Ont. native starred for the Greyhounds from 2018-22, tallying 74 goals and 82 assists for 156 points (74-82-156) over three seasons. Kartye was among the Western Conference’s top forwards last season, ranking fourth among all goal-scorers (45) while being voted the conference’s top overage player by OHL General Managers. Kartye was also an OHL Third Team All-Star in 2021-22.

The undrafted free-agent signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Kraken last March and has since recorded 28 goals and 29 assists this season with the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League. Kartye was named the AHL’s Rookie of the Year.
