For the first time in seven years the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds opened the OHL Priority Selection with a defenceman.
In 2011 it was Darnell Nurse, in 2018 it’s Ryan O’Rourke.
The former was the league’s third overall selection and the club’s only choice that season until pick 44. The latter was taken 20th overall and is also going to be the foundation of his class representing the Hounds only pick until number 71.
O’Rourke joins a program that Nurse helped establish as one of the league’s most successful in recent memory with four West Division titles in five years. The Vaughan Kings rearguard brings offensive ability having tallied 44 points in 55 games last season. He also helped his team advance all the way to the OHL Cup Final and won silver with GTHL Red at the 2018 OHL Gold Cup.
O’Rourke officially announced his commitment to the club in June.
When it came time for pick 71 the Hounds used it to select Rory Kerins, captain of the Mississauga Rebels. He scored 19 goals and 19 assists in just 26 games last season and recently announced his official commitment to the program.
Next up for O’Rourke is Hockey Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-17 Development Camp from July 21-27 in Calgary.
