Speers recognized as co-winner of H.P. Broughton Trophy

Story by Peter Ruicci (Sault Star)

Blake Speers and Rebekah Trudel were named co-winners of this year’s H.P. Broughton Trophy at Tuesday’s 61st Rotary Sports Awards Dinner at the Marconi Club.
The Broughton goes annually to the Sault’s sportsperson of the year.

Speers, a Soo Greyhounds forward, and Trudel, a wrestler who has represented both Superior Heights high school and the Algoma Wrestling Club, were selected in voting done by members of the Sault’s sports media.

Speers, a Sault native, began the 2016-2017 season in the NHL, making the New Jersey Devils as an underage.

The talented forward was returned to the Hounds after three games, but was injured in his first game back.
