O’Rourke ‘thrilled’ to join Greyhounds (Sault Star)

Story by Peter Ruicci (Sault Star)

Ryan O’Rourke is no stranger to Sault Ste. Marie, or the Soo Greyhounds.

The 15-year-old (2002 birth year) defenceman, taken by the Hounds in the first round (20th overall) of Saturday’s Ontario Hockey League Priority Selections draft, visited the city a couple of weeks ago.

The Pickering, Ont., native, and parents Mike and Erin O’Rourke, watched the Greyhounds 8-0 playoff victory over Saginaw on March 25 at Essar Centre.

They met Hounds general manager Kyle Raftis and head coach Drew Bannister and his coaching staff.

They also had a chance to look around the city.

And the plan is to return to the Sault on Friday for Game 5 of the Greyhounds Western Conference semifinal against Owen Sound.

“This is pretty exciting for me,” said the six-foot, 175-pounder, who starred this past season for the Vaughan Kings AAA Minor Midgets. “The Essar Centre was loud and energetic and exciting. I think I’ll enjoy playing there.”
