Hounds kick-off home stand on winning note
SAULT STE. MARIE, ON-
It’s a West Division rivalry that has favoured the Soo Greyhounds over the past three seasons.
Heading into action on Wednesday Night against Flint, the Hounds held an impressive 18-3-2-1 record against the Firebirds.
The Hounds would continue on that positive note, and kick off their extended home stand with a 4-1 victory in the two team’s first meeting of 2018-19.
A steady pace to the first period would wind down but not before the home side would open up the scoring with under two minutes (1:28) to play.
JORDAN SAMBROOK’s left point shot left a rebound to be scooped up and buried by Sault Ste. Marie product COLE MACKAY for his 3rd goal of the season and a 1-0 Greyhounds lead.
BARRETT HAYTON, who was making his season debut with the Greyhounds after being returned from the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes a day earlier, started the chances for the Hounds in the opening minute before the two teams skated through plenty whistles and a scoreless first half of the period.
It was that opening half of the period that saw the Hounds hold Flint off the shot clock for over nine minutes in the middle stanza.
The lead would increase to 2-0 at 14:04 when KEEGHAN HOWDESHELL backhanded the puck towards the goal from behind the goal line and it eluded Flint netminder Emanual Vella for the insurance marker.
For Howdeshell it marked his 2nd goal of the season, and first in five games, while for Vella it put a blemish on his otherwise strong evening.
Hounds lead 2-0 after forty minutes.
An early powerplay in the third period produced the Hounds third goal of the night when MORGAN FROST’s cross ice feed was wristed by BARRETT HAYTON and past Vella to increase the Greyhounds lead to 3-0.
After Eric Uba spoiled MATTHEW VILLALTA’s shutout bid with under two minutes to play, MORGAN FROST would seal the empty net goal at 18:55 to round out the scoring in the Hounds victory.
The win improved the Hounds record to 4-3-2-1 on the season, while also saw the club produce it’s highest shot output of the season along with their lowest against by limiting Flint to twenty-two shots on goal.
