Hounds howl, beat Wolves

It had been three weeks since the Soo Greyhounds won a game in regulation.

That’s exactly what they did on Wednesday, and in convincing fashion to boot.

The Hounds controlled play throughout, while scoring four times in the second period, en route to a 7-4 win over the Sudbury Wolves before 3,774 at GFL Memorial Gardens.

“We got our offensive swagger back a little bit,” said Hounds centre Morgan Frost, who scored once while also setting up a short-handed goal by Zack Trott and a power-play marker by Barrett Hayton.

“This is the team we want to be,” added head coach John Dean, whose club had gone six games without winning in regulation since whipping the Flint Firebirds 9-3 here on Oct. 31.

The Soo was 2-3-0-1 over those six games with both of their victories coming in overtime.

“We want visiting teams to walk in and get peppered in the first 20 minutes,” said Dean, whose club outshot the Wolves 16-4 in the opening period and 40-28 overall. “No. 16 (Frost) put us on his back tonight (Wednesday), and that was a very-good, 60-minute effort for us.”

Hayton, who finished with a goal and an assist, spoke of how he and his teammates were “real good.”

Tied 1-1 after the opening frame, the Soo took a 5-3 lead into the final 20 minutes.

“Our effort was there and that’s something that was evident,” noted Hayton, as the Hounds improved to 14-6-3-1, heading into a two-game road trip which begins Friday in Guelph.
