PLAYOFF PREVIEW; Firebirds (7) vs Greyhounds (2)

Western Conference Quarter-Final Series
Flint Firebirds (7) vs Soo Greyhounds (2)

Separated by twenty-eight points in the Western Conference standings, the Soo Greyhounds (48-16-3-1, 100 points) and Flint Firebirds (32-28-3-5, 72 points) will meet in their opening round best-of-seven playoff series starting on Thursday Night (full schedule below).

It’s the first time the Hounds will meet their division rival since it’s move to Flint prior to the start of the 2015-16 season from Plymouth.
(the Hounds and Whalers met in 2010 where the Whalers won the series in five games).

This year the divsion rivals met six (6) times during the regular season, evenly splitting the season series with the visiting team coming out on top every game.

The Hounds were 3-1-1-1 overall against Flint.

Here’s some numbers from their head-to-head match-ups in the regular season;
Goals For – 25  |  Goals Against – 21
Shots For – 173  |  Shots Against – 197
Power Play – 6 for 29 (20.7%)  |  Penalty Kill – 22 for 26 (84.6%)

While the Greyhounds finished and clinched their third West Division title in four year’s (Angelo Bumbacco Trophy), Flint struggled heading into the post-season.

The Hounds were 8-1-1-0 in their last 10 games.

Flint heads into the post season winless in their last 7 games (0-4-2-1) and were 3-4-2-1 in their last 10.

One similarity between the two teams is the lack of playoff experience between the pipes.
Between the four goalies on the Hounds and Firebirds, there is just 40 minutes of playoff experience.

Back in his rookie season with the Hounds (2015), JOSEPH RAAYMAKERS relieved BRANDON HALVERSON for third period action in a pair of games (Saginaw/Guelph) that were in full control by the Hounds.
The Chatham, ON faced, and stopped, an even eight shots in both appearances.

While the Erie Otter’s Alex DeBrincat posted the league-leading 127 points this regular season, there are three players in this series in the Top 15.

Flint’s Ryan Moore (39-51-90) finished in 7th while teammate Kole Sherwood (33-52-85) rounded out the top 10.

Greyhounds’ BOBBY MACINTYRE’S 80-point season (28-52-80) pegged him as the 14th highest offense in the OHL.

• Bobby MacIntyre (28-52-80);  24 PP Pts;  4 SHG;  7 GWG
